Our Medical Advisory Panel brings together leading clinicians and researchers from across the UK who share a commitment to improving care for people affected by Pelvic Radiation Disease (PRD). Their expertise helps ensure that our guidance and resources are clinically robust, evidence-based, and aligned with best practice, with each member contributing unique insight to our work.
About Mr Thurairaja
As part of our Medical Advisory Panel, we are delighted to spotlight Mr Ramesh Thurairaja MD, FRCS (Urol), FEBU, Consultant Urological Surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in London.
Mr Thurairaja is a distinguished urological surgeon with specialist expertise in complex urinary conditions, bladder cancer and reconstructive surgery. He completed advanced fellowships in Switzerland and the UK, developing expertise in both open and robotic surgical techniques. He previously worked as a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Kent & Canterbury Hospital, where he established and led the robotic bladder cancer service for East Kent.
Alongside his clinical work, Mr Thurairaja completed an MD thesis focused on prostate cancer and has published more than 30 peer reviewed articles in international journals.
Leading Specialist Care for Radiation Cystitis
Mr Thurairaja has a particular interest in supporting people experiencing urinary complications following pelvic cancer radiotherapy. He is a pioneer in the management of radiation cystitis and leads a dedicated national specialist Radiation Cystitis Clinic at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, which has been providing care since 2016.
The clinic supports people living with complex urinary and pain symptoms caused by pelvic radiotherapy, with patients referred from across the UK by both specialist teams and GPs. Through this work, Mr Thurairaja has developed extensive expertise in understanding and managing the longer term effects that pelvic radiotherapy can have on the urinary system.
Supporting people living with Pelvic Radiation Disease
As a member of PRDA’s Medical Advisory Panel, Mr Thurairaja brings valuable specialist knowledge and a commitment to improving care for people affected by PRD.
He supports PRDA across a wide range of activities, including contributing to the development and review of information resources and guidance materials, providing clinical insight to support healthcare professionals and helping inform responses to enquiries from people living with PRD. He also supports the wider PRD community by sharing his expertise at events, encouraging collaboration among healthcare professionals and offering mentorship to those developing research in this area.
Mr Thurairaja’s specialist experience in radiation cystitis and his commitment to improving awareness, understanding and support for the long term effects of pelvic radiotherapy make him a valued member of PRDA’s Medical Advisory Panel.
