We’re pleased to share the newly published Southwest Radiotherapy Late Effects Services (SWRLES) Evaluation Report, an independent assessment of the region’s Radiotherapy Late Effects Services across Somerset, Wiltshire, Avon, and Gloucestershire (SWAG) Cancer Alliance.

We welcome the findings of this report and hope it will help shape future long-term initiatives across the UK, particularly in regions where these services are urgently needed.

Since its launch in 2022, the SWRLES has supported over 1,300 patient referrals, addressing a broad range of late effect symptoms following radiotherapy. The evaluation sought to answer three key questions:

1. Is a Radiotherapy Late Effects Service necessary and efficient?

The volume and variety of referrals clearly demonstrate a need for dedicated support. Patients presented with a wide spectrum of physical and psychological late effects—highlighting the importance of targeted services for this population.

2. Is a Regional Radiotherapy Late Effects Service Model effective?

  • 88.2% of patients reported an improvement by the time of discharge.

  • 70% of all discharged patients experienced improved overall function and symptom control.

3. Do patients and service providers value the service?

  • 99% of patient feedback indicated a positive impact from accessing SWRLES.

  • The service also led to a notable reduction in outpatient appointments, unplanned hospital admissions, and A&E visits—demonstrating clear benefits for both patients and wider service delivery.

  • Feedback from healthcare teams suggests the service has not added pressure elsewhere. Over half of staff surveyed reported a reduction in their overall workload.
